Balance between professional and private life
Kathrin proves to us every day that parenthood, management responsibility and career can be reconciled. As an in-house lawyer at voxeljet, she is responsible for the legal department and advises the executive board and the specialist departments with her team on all issues of labour and contract law. But as soon as her working day draws to a close, she takes on another important role. Namely that of a wife and mother of two.
Two roles that could hardly be more different and require a high degree of flexibility – with flexible working hours and part-time models, she finds the balance between professional and private life.
A career that showed her the world
Kathrin originally comes from Waldshut-Tiengen. A historic, small twin town on the Rhine, right on the border with Switzerland. She became enthusiastic about law at an early age and moved to the next historic city to study law: Augsburg. There she completed the 1st state examination with a focus on labour law. For her legal traineeship and 2nd state exam, she travelled on to Bonn and Tel Aviv before starting her first job as a lawyer in a medium-sized law firm after graduation. In 2015, Kathrin returned to Augsburg after a 4-month sabbatical in South America and took over responsibility for the legal department at voxeljet AG. “It fascinates me to apply the complex, theoretical law to the practice of business operations.”
It doesn't have to be a tightrope act
The fact that starting a family does not have to be an exclusion criterion for a career was just as natural for Kathrin as the support she received from her husband, the management and her colleagues. The key lies in communication. That’s why it was important to prepare well for parental leave and to involve her colleagues closely at an early stage. “The regular consultation with my colleagues helped me to stay informed about important issues during the one-year parental leave and to quickly find my way back into the rhythm of everyday work.
Work is an important part of my life - being a lawyer and working with my colleagues gives me a lot of pleasure and enriches my life. At the end of the day, however, my family remains the most important thing, despite all my enthusiasm for the law.

Flexible working time models help to master the double burden
Flexible working hours and the possibility of working on a mobile basis form the foundation for successfully balancing family and work. It goes without saying that it is a daily challenge to reconcile both roles. At home, she can rely on the partnership with her husband, with whom she shares responsibility for the two children. At work, on the support of her colleagues*.
“Work is an important part of my life – working as a lawyer and collaborating with my colleagues gives me great pleasure and enriches my life. At the end of the day, however, family remains the most important thing, despite all my enthusiasm for the legal profession.”
